The City police are yet to put its finger on the reason for the fatal accident that occurred near Ambalamukku a day ago. The authorities suspect negligence on the part of both the motorcyclist and the victims. One woman was killed and two injured in the accident.
While there are claims that the accident was a result of racing between two motorcyclists, the police dismissed the possibility and maintained that it was a case of speeding by the motorcyclist, according to preliminary findings.
A CCTV footage, which was captured from a private establishment nearby and telecast by news channels, purportedly showed two motorcyclists speeding towards the accident spot. They are yet to be examined by the investigators.
An official said the accident occurred when many vehicles stopped on the narrow lane along the Ambalamukku-Kowdiar stretch to enable pedestrians to cross the road. “A traffic block stretching to a long distance had formed within a short time. It would have been difficult for motorcyclists to race under the circumstances,” Circle Inspector (Traffic, North) Dileep Kumar said.
Eyewitness account
Eyewitnesses reportedly said that motorcyclist Hansar was speeding, manoeuvring between four-wheelers. The deceased woman, Jyothi Lakshmi, who held her colleagues’ hands, was caught on the path of the motorcycle with the other women pulling her back and forth in an uncertain manner.
The injured women, Thulasi and Shalini, are recuperating at the Government Medical College Hospital. The police have placed under surveillance Hansar and his friend Anand, who was riding pillion. They are both being treated at a private hospital.
Meanwhile, the City police will intensify patrolling, especially during night, on various stretches of the city that has witnessed many instances of rash driving in the recent past.
