Police inaction in assault case alleged

January 13, 2015 12:00 am | Updated 06:08 am IST - THIRUVANANTHAPURAM:

More than two weeks after three men allegedly slapped and harassed a minor girl and her friends at a public function at Puthenthoppu, under the Kadinamkulam police station limits, the police are yet to make any headway into the complaint lodged by the girl.

The girl, a Plus Two student, and her friends, were participating in a Christmas and New Year celebration organised by a local library at Puthenthoppu when the incident allegedly took place.

As per the complaint filed with the police, three men, one of them identified as Clinton, hailing from the same locality, had approached her, reportedly in an inebriated condition.

Manhandled

After asking her for water, they slapped and abused her. Organisers of the programme who intervened were also manhandled.

The girl’s father, Mathew Roshan, said he had repeatedly approached the police to know the progress of the case, but the refrain was that the accused were absconding. The Kadinamkulam police on Sunday repeated the same when contacted, stating that a police team had gone to the houses of the accused, but they were absconding.

On Monday, Mr. Roshan petitioned the Home Minister and the Superintendent of the Police (SP), Thiruvananthapuram Rural, accusing the local police of inaction and of siding with the accused. He alleged that the accused were involved in several similar cases, including in the assault of a policeman earlier but were left alone by the police.

The SP’s explanation, he said, was that most police officers were deployed in Sabarimala, which was why the probe was dragging on.
