Plea to set up CPWD office in city

February 13, 2012 11:39 am | Updated 11:39 am IST - THIRUVANANTHAPURAM:

Shashi Tharoor, MP, has urged Union Minister for Urban Development Kamal Nath to take steps to set up the newly sanctioned zonal office of the Central Public Works Department (CPWD) exclusively for Kerala in Thiruvananthapuram.

In a letter to the Union Minister, Dr. Tharoor said that setting up the zonal office in the State capital would ensure better coordination with the State government and various departments. It was important for a State like Kerala with its unique problems relating to land issues. Further, many development activities were likely to be centred on Thiruvananthapuram.

Dr. Tharoor pointed out that the capital city had the highest concentration of Central government and public-sector establishments, many of them of national importance. These institutions could also be served better if the zonal office of the CPWD was established here.
