Plea for Central intervention to help nurses

January 30, 2015 12:00 am | Updated 05:42 am IST - THIRUVANANTHAPURAM:

Minister for Non-resident Keralites’ Affairs K.C. Joseph has urged Union Minister for External Affairs Sushama Swaraj to intervene to help nurses stranded in Kuwait. He claimed that the nurses were cheated by recruitment agencies.

In a letter to Ms. Swaraj, Mr. Joseph said the chances of the nurses getting recruited to vacancies in the Ministry of Health and the Ministry of Education in Kuwait should be explored.

The Indian Embassy might be directed to take steps to avoid their repatriation (by securing them employment), the Minister said.

Noting that the nurses were not given employment as per the terms of agreement, the Minister said 41 nurses in Al Issa Company had represented to him that they had reached Kuwait by paying Rs.6 to Rs.8 lakh to the recruiting agency.
