Plachimada activists arrested

Activists of the Plachimada Anti-Coca-Cola Struggle Committee and the Plachimada Struggle Solidarity Committee were arrested by the police when they attempted to wave black flags at Union Home Minister Rajnath Singh here on Friday.

The activists, led by struggle leaders Vilayodi Venugopal, Vijayan Ambalakkad, and Arumukhan Pathichira, were held as they staged a protest against the Union government for its role in the denial of Presidential assent for the Plachimada Coca Cola Victims Relief and Compensation Claims Special Tribunal Bill. Inaugurating the protest, Mr. Venugopal accused the Union government of having become a slave of the corporates. The Bill was adopted by the Kerala Assembly on February 24 and sent for Presidential assent on March 30, 2011, but the assent was withheld on the advice of the Home Ministry, he said.
