Palm Sunday observed with religious fervour

Faithful take out processions holding coconut palm fronds

The Christian community in the city observed Palm Sunday with religious fervour to usher in Passion Week.

The occasion, also known as ‘Osana Njayar’ or ‘Kuruthola Perunnal’, commemorated the triumphant entry of Jesus Christ in Jerusalem. The faithful took part in processions holding palm fronds and crosses made of coconut palm leaves.

Cardinal Baselios Cleemis Catholicos, head of the Syro-Malankara Church, was the chief celebrant of the Palm Sunday service held at the St. Mary’s Malankara Syrian Catholic Cathedral at Pattom. Thiruvananthapuram Archbishop (Latin rite) Thomas J. Netto led the prayers at the St. Joseph’s Metropolitan Cathedral at Palayam.

Changanassery Auxiliary Bishop Thomas Tharayil led the special prayers at the Lourdes Forane Church near PMG. The Palm Sunday procession and the Holy Mass held at the CSI Mateer Memorial Church in LMS Compound was led by church vicar Fr. D. Jacob.

At St. George’s Orthodox Syrian Cathedral, the Palm Sunday prayers were led by vicar Fr. Mathew Ninan. Fr. Fevin John was the main celebrant of the Holy Mass and procession St. Peter’s Jacobite Syrian Orthodox Simhasana Cathedral.

Hundreds of faithful participated in the Palm Sunday procession at the Kurisumala Pilgrim Centre at Vellarada. Vicar Ratheesh Markose led the procession taken out from Koothali.
