O.N.V. Memorial Award for T. Padmanabhan

For his contributions to short story

The University of Kerala has chosen writer T. Padmanabhan for this year’s O.N.V. Memorial Award in recognition of his exceptional contributions to Malayalam short story.

Mr. Padmanabhan was selected by a four-member panel headed by poet Desamangalam Ramakrishnan. The award, which commemorates poet O.N.V. Kurup, carries a purse of ₹1 lakh, citation and statuette. Poet Sugathakumari was the winner last year.

In his works, Mr. Padmanabhan transcended the traditional concepts governing the use of language and aesthetics, the award panel concluded.

The university, in a statement, made special note of several of Mr. Padmanabhan's best-loved stories including Makhan Singhinte Maranam, Prakasham Parathunna Penkutty, Kaalabhairavan, Gowri and Puzha Kadannu Marangalude Idayilekku. The world of the short story, before Mr. Padmanabhan, was defined chiefly by a narrative pieced together by beginnings, middle sections, and endings. His success lay in transforming the genre into a ‘poetic sculpture,’ journeying through the internal workings of the character, the university said.
