A team of the Excise Department on Saturday seized 1 kg of ganja and arrested a person in this connection. Based on an input, the team led by Excise Inspector Mohan Kumar arrested Pramod, 23, of Vellarada while he was trying to smuggle ganja from Kalikkavila on a motorbike.
The accused was under the constant watch of the Excise Department following inputs that he was selling the substance to students at Vellarada and Parassala areas, said Mr. Kumar.
He said that Pramod had confessed that he used to peddle ganja in the city and suburbs and that his main clients included school students, headload and migrant workers. The ganja recovered was valued around Rs, 16,000. The accused was earlier arrested in a similar case and other theft cases. He was produced before a magistrate and remanded in judicial custody.
In the last two months, the Excise team posted at the checkpost at Amaravila, had arrested 10 persons during raids and seized from them around 20 kg of ganja.
