A group of three men have been visiting various parts of the district as part of their bicycle expedition from Nepal to spread the message of environmental protection and to create awareness on HIV/AIDS.

Amrit Baral, a doctor; Shankar Poudel, a marketing manager; and Ajit Baral, an environmentalist; left their hometown Pokhara in western Nepal on September 20 for the expedition christened World Bicycle Tour.

They have covered various places, including New Delhi.

Relevance

They say the issues they highlight find immense relevance in all countries in the South Asian region.

Dr. Baral has been actively involved in conducting awareness programmes and he regards the recent devastating earthquake in Nepal an eye-opener that prompted him to work for the welfare of those who were denied basic needs and healthcare facilities.

Mr. Poudel has travelled to 10 countries on a bicycle a decade ago. Mr. Baral has been a staunch advocate for nature conservation and has been part of tree planting drives and cleanliness campaigns.

They came together while working for the non-governmental organisation, Dirghayu Nepal, which works for rehabilitating those affected by the earthquake.

During the Thiruvananthapuram-leg of their campaign, they met the Thiruvananthapuram Latin Archbishop Soosa Pakiam M. and office-bearers of the Indian Medical Association, YMCA and other NGOs.

They also plan to visit Visakhapatnam and Manipur in the country, besides Maldives, Sri Lanka and Myanmar.

They also hope to organise awareness programmes by using the funds raised through the expedition.
