Nuns asked to leave Kuravilangad convent

Even as the government appointed a special prosecutor in the nun rape case, four of the five nuns who had protested against Bishop Franco Mulakkal, the accused, have been asked to leave the convent here.

In separate communique to the nuns at the St. Francis Mission home at Kuravilangad, Superior General Regina Kadamthottu of the Missionaries of Jesus congregation seeks to enforce the transfer orders issued to them last year.

The communique to Sister Anupama Kelamangalathuveliyil directs her to join the Chamiyari community in Punjab as per an earlier order in March 2018 where as Sister Ancitta Urumbil should join the Pariyaram community, Kannur.

Sister Alphy Pallasseril has been directed to join the Pakartala community in Bihar while Sister Josephine Villoonnickal is reminded of her appointment as Superior at the Lalmatia community in Jharkhand in May 2017.

Sister Nina Rose, who was also part of the protest, and the survivor nun have not been issued any such directive.

Reminder

The letters had been sent as a reminder to the original transfers orders.

“It pains me to note that you had not only failed to join the Chamiyari community on the given date but also paid scant heed to my reminder notice dated June 20, urging you to join the community to which you were appointed canonically vide the order dated March 23, 2018,” noted the communique dated January 3, addressed to Sister Anupama .

It further seeks the nuns not to make their legal obligations in the case an alibi to compromise the affirmed religious vows and principles of community life.

According to the communique, accusations sans truth have been flying thick and fast in public realm about the lack of concern the MJ congregation was showing to the nuns who are standing for justice. Confirming the receipt of the order, Sister Anupama accused the church of taking vengeance for their public protests and said they were resolved to stay back at the convent here.
