Northeast handicrafts fair begins

Mayor K. Chandrika inaugurated a two-week-long fair organised by North-Eastern Handicrafts and Handloom Development Corporation at Chandrasekharan Nair Stadium here on Wednesday.

The fair, financed by Development Commissionerate (Handicrafts), Union Ministry of Textiles, showcases exquisite artefacts and textiles from Assam, Arunachal Pradesh, Manipur, Meghalaya, Mizoram, Nagaland, Tripura, and Sikkim.

C. George Varghese, Deputy Director, Ministry of Textiles, told the media that nearly 200 craftsmen were participating in the fair. As the craftsmen interacted with the customers directly and thereby avoided middlemen, they would get the full value of their products for themselves and would be ale to get firsthand understanding of the market, he said.

The fair, which would be on till November 30, also featured demonstrations by award-winning craftsmen, he added.
