New library for Women’s College

May 15, 2015 12:00 am | Updated 05:53 am IST - THIRUVANANTHAPURAM:

In a first step towards the realisation of a long cherished dream, the foundation stone of a new state-of-the-art library was laid at the Government Women’s College here by Education Minister P.K. Abdu Rabb on Thursday.

The four-storey library complex, being built at an outlay of Rs.3 crore, would have books on the first two floors. The third would be a reading space-cum-students’ lounge, and the fourth floor would be used as a research centre. The building is being designed by architect G. Sankar without felling any trees on the campus.

Addressing the function, chaired by Health Minister V.S. Sivakumar, Mr. Rabb said the library and research centre would place the students of the college on a par with their peers elsewhere who were already gaining knowledge without the help of teachers and classrooms.

Speaking on the occasion, M. Nandakumar, Director of Collegiate Education, said the library was being sanctioned only to colleges that had conferred an ‘A’ grade by the National Assessment and Accreditation Committee (NAAC). The facility would start functioning by the next academic year.

College union chairperson Malavika M.S. used the occasion to complain to Mr. Sivakumar about the non-availability of drinking water on campus, and the Minister promised the necessary amount from his local area development fund to address the issue.
