Agency to submit short-term proposals to civic body within a fortnight

The city Corporation has sought the services of the National Transportation Planning and Research Centre (Natpac) to solve the traffic issues in Kazhakuttam Junction, its adjoining areas and near the entry to Technopark.

Accompanied by Mayor V.K. Prasanth, a Natpac team led by its Director B.G. Sreedevi visited Kazhakuttam Junction and the adjoining areas on Tuesday morning, the peak traffic hour, to get first-hand information on the traffic problems being faced by road users.

The team visited the roads leading to Market Junction from the NH 66, the narrow stretch of High School road near Market Road Junction, the conflict points on the NH near AJ Hospital Junction, and the Kazhakuttam-Menamkulam road.

Natpac officials T. Ramakrishnan and B. Anish Kini accompanied the Director and the Mayor.

Kazhakuttam area has become a major traffic hazard for vehicle users as well as pedestrians due to haphazard parking on roadside. The Mayor explained the traffic snarls near the bus stops on the busy NH-66 stretch.

Detailed study

Natpac would carry out a detailed traffic study of the stretch and give short-term proposals within a fortnight to solve the problems, Ms. Sreedevi said. The plan would include parking strategies, one-way regulation and other measures to be implemented immediately to ensure smooth flow of traffic in the corridor.

The expected traffic pattern on this stretch after completion of the proposed elevated flyover at Kazhakuttam Bypass Junction and four laning of the NH 66 would also be looked into while formulating the proposals, she said.

The Natpac would also conduct a study into the traffic conflicts on the entry to Technopark, near Karyavattam, on the NH 66. Appropriate traffic management measures would be submitted to the civic body, she added.
