More steps for welfare of backward classes

February 07, 2012 01:23 pm | Updated 01:23 pm IST - Thiruvananthapuram:

The government will seek a report from the authorities concerned on strengthening the activities of Scheduled Castes (SC) cooperative societies, Minister for the Welfare of Scheduled Castes and Backward Classes A.P. Anil Kumar said here on Monday.

Presiding over a State-level advisory committee meeting organised by his department, the Minister said the government would release funds for construction of hostels for students in the backward communities subject to availability of land.

“As many as 3,500 more SC families would be allotted houses this year. The financial assistance for this scheme would be disbursed soon,” he said. The Minister said funds for SC welfare would be integrated with the general fund, and the MP/MLA local area development funds to take up construction of roads to SC colonies, he said.

State Police Chief Jacob Punnoose told the meeting that action would be taken against police officers who failed to invoke the Atrocities Act in cases of violence against persons belonging to the backward communities. He said a fast-track system would be introduced to handle such cases.
