Cancer care facilities at medical college hospitals are being strengthened as part of the State government’s fight against the dreaded disease, Health Minister K.K. Shailaja said on Wednesday.
Patients stand to benefit when every medical college hospital transforms into a ‘mini’ cancer centre, the Minister said, inaugurating ten new facilities at the Government Medical College Hospital (MCH), Thiruvananthapuram.
As part of the fight against cancer, the government had created 102 posts in surgical oncology, medical oncology, and oncopathology.
In the meantime, steps were also being taken to strengthen the primary health-care centres, Ms. Shailaja said.
The heavy rush at medical colleges could be contained only by strengthening the primary care facilities, she said.
New schemes
Chief Minister Pinarayi Vijayan will inaugurate the construction of various schemes, under the master plan for developing the MCH, on February 26, the Minister said.
The facilities inaugurated on Wednesday include LINAC (Linear Accelerator) block, cancer registry, neurosurgery microscope, 3D colour doppler echo machine, digital x-ray, renovated ward for ENT patients, prepaid ambulance, medical ICU, and a new web portal.
