More exams on the cards?

October 14, 2015 12:00 am | Updated 05:50 am IST - THIRUVANANTHAPURAM:

The Kerala Sasthra Sahithya Parishad has come out against what it has termed “surreptitious moves” to limit continuous evaluation in schools and, to increase the number of examinations and the number of papers per examination.

A press note issued here on Tuesday says moves are afoot to impose a mechanical evaluation system in the State’s schools. Evaluation is something that should take place along with learning. It is not something to measure ‘pass’ or ‘fail’. Rather, it is to be used to find out learning deficiencies, to devise strategies to counter such deficiencies and enable students to reach desired levels of learning.

If the government wishes to raise standards of education, it should ensure that the continuous and comprehensive evaluation process takes place in an efficient manner. Imposing on students mechanical learning and evaluation systems is a violation of student rights, of the Right to Education Act and even of the Constitution, the press note says. Instead of studying the impact of a recent increase in the number of examinations and in the number of periods, the government is trying to push through some “twisted reforms.”
