More elderly friendly initiatives in the offing

Ministers says Vayomithram scheme, a model initiative

Initiatives will be launched in more sectors as part of attempts to make the State elderly friendly, Minister for Social Justice K.K. Shylaja has said.

She was speaking after inaugurating the International Day of Older Persons observance organised by the Social Justice Department here on Tuesday. The government, she said, was focussing on social and financial consideration and safety of the elderly. Old-age homes had been renovated under the Sayamprabha scheme. Day care centres too were made part of the scheme. The Vayomithram scheme that focussed on the health of the elderly was a model initiative, she said.

A book on the programmes of the State for the welfare of the elderly was launched on the occasion. The day was also observed at Madavoor Government CNPS where an elderly former student was honoured on the occasion. Ninety-five-year-old Prabhakaran Unnithan was showered with love and kisses by his grandchildren — twins Abhinav and Abhinand, who study in Class 2 in the same school — and their friends. The event was held to uphold the theme of the day’s observance ‘The journey to age equality.’

Headmistress D. Ushakumari and Samagra Shiksha trainers Vysakh K.S., Smitha P.K., Kavitha T.S., teachers Somarajan, Bindu, and Arun were present.
