Minister to chair meeting of KSRTC unions today

Efforts to avert dawn-to-dusk strike on December 17

Minister for Transport Thiruvanchoor Radhakrishnan will chair a meeting of the representatives of the two recognised unions of the Kerala State Road Transport Corporation (KSRTC) here on Monday in a bid to avert the proposed dawn-to-dusk strike on December 17.

The talks with the office-bearers of the Centre of India Trade Unions (CITU)-affiliated Kerala State Road Transport Employees Association (KSRTEA) and the Congress-affiliated Transport Democratic Front (TDF) will be at the office of Mr. Radhakrishnan at 2.30 p.m. Union sources said they would attend the meeting.

An office-bearer of the TDF said a decision to defer the December 17 strike was unlikely as the corporation was still groping in the dark with regard to finding a solution to the pension issue. The retirees were to get three months’ pension. The employees were also upset over the Minister’s decision to announce free travel to school students, up to the higher secondary level, in KSRTC buses from February. “The Minister should have taken into account the plight of the retirees while making the announcement in the name of social responsibility,” he said.
