Minister offers help to set up Ayurveda clinical research centre

Centre for Research for Ayurveda-inspired Discovery to come up at RGCB

January 12, 2015 12:00 am | Updated 06:00 am IST - Thiruvananthapuram:

The Union government will support the setting up of a clinical research centre for Ayurveda in the State as soon as the Kerala government can find 50 acres of land for the project, Union Minister of State for AYUSH Shripad Yesso Naik has said.

He was speaking at a function to announce the setting up of a national Centre for Research for Ayurveda-inspired Discovery (AID) at the Rajiv Gandhi Centre for Biotechnology (RGCB) here on Sunday.

Mr. Naik said the repository of knowledge in the 5,000-year-old science of Ayurveda should be put to good use for the benefit of the public by investing in research and development. Ayurveda’s solutions for good health should be scientifically validated so that it gained global acceptability.

Health Minister V.S. Sivakumar, who was present at the function, assured the Union Minister that the State would find the necessary land to set up the centre.

The RGCB has already proposed the setting up of an Ayurveda Clinical Research Centre at Konni and a High-Altitude Discovery Centre at Munnar, as part of its research programme.

Mr. Naik expressed his appreciation that the State had an excellent framework for delivering AYUSH care through its 700 plus dispensaries and 119 Ayurveda hospitals.

The Minister, who has been touring the State for the past six days and visiting premier traditional Ayurveda centres, treatment facilities, and teaching institutions, said the quality of Ayurveda drugs in the State was excellent.

He appealed to stakeholders in the Ayurveda industry to bring out more value-added proprietary Ayurveda formulations, herbal supplements, biologicals, and neutraceutical products, and bring in globally acceptable standardisation and certification process for Ayurveda drugs.

Mr. Sivakumar, in his address, said the State was making all-out efforts to set up the department of AYUSH, in line with the independent and newly set-up Ayush Ministry at the Centre.

Mr. Naik released the brochure of National Arogya Expo 2015, to be held in Thiruvananthapuram in April.

RGCB Director Radhakrishna Pillai said Ayurveda research initiated by the RGCB was aimed at finding a re-designated role for Ayurveda science in the daily lives of people.
