Medical college teachers suspend stir

January 31, 2015 12:00 am | Updated 05:49 am IST - Thiruvananthapuram:

The coordination committee of the Government Medical College Teachers’ Associations has decided to put on hold its on-going agitation following an assurance by Health Minister V.S. Sivakumar.

He had told the association that any decision on the redeployment of faculty in medical colleges to the newly created institutions at Manjeri and Idukki would be taken only after holding discussions with the coordination committee.

The committee took the decision after they met with Mr. Sivakumar on Thursday.

The faculty in all Government Medical Colleges across State had been on agitation against the government’s decision to redeploy teachers from older medical colleges to make up for the deficiency in faculty in the new institutions at Manjeri and Idukki. Mr. Sivakumar had assured the committee that the Health Secretary would be asked to hold discussions with the doctors’ organisations and to look into the grievances of doctors. On the basis of this assurance, the on-going strike was being called off, a statement issued by the committee said here.
