The government is planning to set up a mechanism to utilise funds for road safety quickly and to post the needed personnel, Chief Minister Oommen Chandy has said.
He was inaugurating a workshop on the ‘Role of intelligent transport system in road safety’ organised by the National Transportation Planning and Research Centre (Natpac) in connection with the ongoing Road Safety Week celebrations here on Wednesday.
The Chief Minister said only a joint effort of the Motor Vehicles Department, police, and Public Works Department could reduce accidents.
Mr. Chandy said the support of all classes of road users was needed for a safe and efficient transport system. Traffic rules should be made more strict and enforced for all classes of motorists, he said.
Later, the Chief Minister released a booklet and newsletter of Natpac and a report of the guidelines to be followed in road accidents. K. Muraleedharan, MLA, presided over the function.
State Police Chief K.S. Balasubramanian, executive vice president of KSCSTE P. Marapandiyan, Transport Commissioner R. Sreelekha, Natpac Director B.G. Sreedevi, and councillor George Louis spoke.
Earlier, ADGP (Traffic) Arunkumar Sinha, addressing a technical session, said the police were taking positive steps to ensure road discipline and reduce accidents in the State.
