Mayoral nominees fight ‘outsider’ tag

‘Outsider’ is a tag that the mayoral candidates of both the LDF and UDF have been given by their rivals in their respective wards this time around. But, such tags have not always been found to be effective in the past. C.Jayan Babu, the mayoral candidate of the LDF who lives in Palayam will be contesting from the Pangode ward. Giving him confidence will be his past record of winning from other wards. In his two stints as Mayor, he had won from Pappanamcode and Thycaud.

Also, the Pangode ward has been a Left bastion for several years. This year, the BJP was the first off the block in campaigning after the announcement of S.Madhusoodhanan Nair’s candidature. There was some controversy recently after the UDF candidate R.Narayanan Thampy accused the BJP of disrupting his poll campaign and assaulting him. He had said that he was withdrawing from campaigning.

But, in the last three days, all the three candidates have stepped up their campaigns, indicating that Jayan Babu might have a fight on his hands. Local LDF workers say that since he is familiar to the residents due to his previous Mayor stint, he could be having an advantage.

At Mudavanmugal, UDF is fielding its mayoral candidate K. Maheswaran Nair. Compared to Jayan Babu, he is an outsider by only a few kilometres, as he is living in the adjacent Poojappura ward, where he is the current councillor. His opponent is someone who is involved round the clock in all local issues and occasions — LDF candidate V. Gopakumar, who is the secretary of the ‘poura samithi’ and was also the branch secretary of the CPI (M). Mudavanmugal has also been a stronghold for the Left for the past several decades, but in the last local body elections, UDF won from here. That factor could give some confidence to Maheswaran Nair.
