Tension prevailed outside the Secretariat premises during the wee hours of Thursday when a 49-year old man attempted suicide close to the venue of the indefinite agitation being undertaken by BJP leader C.K. Padmanabhan.

The man was admitted to the Government Medical College Hospital here with around 75% burn injuries, official sources said. He had been on an indefinite fast for the last four days in connection with the Sabarimala issue.

The Cantonment police said that the incident occurred by around 1.30 a.m. when he was purportedly spottedby the BJP activists who were at the agitation venue.

After sensing something amiss, a few workers rushed to alert the Cantonment police nearby, said Cantonment Inspector station house officer (SHO) M. Prasad. That was when the man attempted suicide. He was soon rushed to the hospital.
