A man who went fishing with his son drowned in a panchayat pond at Meppukada in the Malayinkeezhu police station limits here on Sunday.

According to the police, John, 36, son of Thankaiyyan Nadar, Puthenveetil, Meppukada, had gone to the pond around 11 a.m. on Sunday along with his nine-year-old son for fishing. It is believed that his fishing line and hook got entangled with a net in the water and John was trying to retrieve it when he fell into the pond.

The boy immediately raised an alarm but by the time local people and the Fire and Rescue Services team managed to take him out, John had died. The body was handed over to the family after an autopsy at the Government Medical College Hospital.

John is survived by wife Nalini and two sons.
