A 45-year-old man and his daughter were killed after being run over by a tipper lorry near Valiyasala on Sunday.

Samji Kumar of Eruthavoor in Russelpuram, Balaramapuram, and his 14-year old daughter Dhanya were killed after their motorcycle was knocked down by the lorry. The accident took place at Choorakkattupalayam by around 2.15 p.m.

According to the Thampanoor police, both the vehicles came from the same direction of Killipalam and stopped before the Choorakkattupalayam traffic signal.

While the truck was supposed to proceed straight for Power House, the driver had stopped the vehicle on the right lane. On the other hand, Samji was headed towards Thampanoor, but had stopped on the left lane, even while they were supposed to turn right at the junction.

“Presuming that the lorry driver would facilitate the motorcycle’s passage, Samji turned right when the signal turned green. However, they were knocked down by the lorry,” Thampanoor sub-inspector V.M. Sreekumar said.

Both the passengers were run over by the lorry. While Dhanya died on the spot, Samji succumbed to his injuries at the Government Medical College Hospital. Samji is survived by his wife C.S. Kumari Suma and a younger daughter Divya. While Samji was an ex-serviceman, Dhanya was a Class IX student at the St. Chrysostom’s English Medium Girls Higher Secondary School in Nellimoodu.

Lane discipline

Mr. Sreekumar pointed out that the failure to maintain lane discipline led to the mishap. The lorry driver, Ratheesh of Mudakkal, was taken into custody following the incident.

The vehicle was transporting clay from Akkulam to a construction site.
