Fire and Rescue Services personnel and the officers of the Southern Air Command’s radar station at Mookkunnimala, near Nemom, were kept on tenterhooks after a major fire broke out, yet again, in the region on Tuesday.

According to Fire and Rescue Services personnel, the suspected wildfire was reported around 1 p.m., following which two fire tenders were rushed to the spot at Cheerappara. Soon, another team was pressed into service from the fire station at Kattakada. Tuesday’s fire was reported from an area not far from where a similar incident was reported on Sunday.

Inaccessible

Owing to the difficulties in accessing the area, a team from the radar station organised efforts to bring the fire under control by pouring water from helicopters. The combined efforts that lasted for over three hours helped in dousing the fire. The fire unit from Kattakada has been kept on standby to attend to any emergency situation that could arise.

Officials said that the area of around 300 acres of land near the radar station was prone to wildfire, particularly during the searing temperature in summer.
