The State government has convened a meeting of people’s representatives of Thiruvananthapuram and Kozhikode here at 11 a.m. on December 16 to brief them on the proposed elevated Light Metro and to take them into confidence for taking the project forward.

The meeting will be at the Legislative Assembly complex for the convenience of legislators as the Assembly is in session.

Chief Minister Oommen Chandy and Principal Adviser, Delhi Metro Rail Corporation (DMRC) E. Sreedharan gave the nod on Monday for the proposed meeting.

The MPs, Mayors, and District Collectors of Thiruvananthapuram and Kozhikode have been invited.

Mr. Chandy, Mr. Sreedharan, and Minister for Public Works V.K. Ebrahim Kunju, and Ministers on the board of Kerala Monorail Corporation Ltd. (KMRL), the special purpose vehicle set up to execute the project, will attend the meeting.

Main points

Official sources told The Hindu that the people’s representatives would be told about the detailed project report (DPR) prepared by the DMRC for the 35.12-km Light Metro in the two cities after a presentation by Mr. Sreedharan.

The reasons for the switch from monorail, a form of mass rapid transit system (MRTS), to the Light Metro would be highlighted, sources said.

The meeting would be a platform for the elected representatives from the two cites to get a complete picture of the project and get their doubts cleared, sources said. Formal invitations for the meeting had been sent by the Minister for Public Works.

Project Director, Light Metro, DMRC, S. Vijayakumaran and General Manager, Civil, G. Jayakumar held discussions on Monday with KMRL officials on the proposed meeting.

The meeting was announced by the Minister in the Assembly on December 4 after legislators aired their apprehensions regarding the project, the technology, and the feasibility aspect.
