Lifetime honour for Fernando Solanas

IFFK offline registrations will begin on Friday and online registrations, on Nov. 10

Fernando Solanas, the Argentine filmmaker and a pioneer of the Third Cinema movement, will be presented the lifetime achievement award at this year’s International Film Festival of Kerala (IFFK).

The award carries a purse of ₹5 lakh.

Five films by Mr. Solanas, which chronicle the resistance against neo-colonialism in Latin America, will be screened at the 24th edition of the IFFK, which is planned to be held from December 6 to 13 in the city.

This year, the IFFK will feature nearly 180 films in various categories, including Competition Section, Indian Cinema, and World Cinema. Fourteen theatres across Thiruvananthapuram city will host the event, the government said on Wednesday.

Chief Minister Pinarayi Vijayan will formally open the 24th IFFK at the Nishagandhi Auditorium. Sarada, who has portrayed some of the strongest women characters in Malayalam cinema, will be the chief guest. Minister for Cultural Affairs A.K. Balan will preside over the function.

Other major attractions at the IFFK include a retrospective of Sarada’s films, a package on Indian experimental films, a package on post-breakup Yugoslavian films, and a homage section dedicated to Mrinal Sen, Gireesh Karnad, Lenin Rajendran, and M.J. Radhakrishnan.


Offline registrations for IFFK will begin on Friday, November 8, and online registrations on November 10.

The delegates’ fee in the general category has been fixed at ₹1,000 this year, in view of the financial crisis, the government said.

The delegates’ fee will go up to ₹1,500 for registrations after November 25. For students, this will be ₹500 and ₹700 respectively. Ten thousand passes will be issued.

Zonal centres

Offline registration facilities will be available at the the Tagore Theatre in Thiruvananthapuram and the Kannur, Kozhikode, Thrissur, and Kottayam zonal centres of the Kerala State Chalachithra Academy.

The first two days of online registration will be confined to students. Online registration for the general category will open on November 12.
