LDF not to have Chief Whip

The Left Democratic Front (LDF) government will not have a Chief Whip with Cabinet rank as was the case with the Oommen Chandy government.

Replying to questions from reporters here on Monday, CPI State secretary Kanam Rajendran said the LDF State committee had decided not to have a Chief Whip since all the parties have their own Whips. There was also the need to bring down government expenditure.

The LDF leadership has also decided to keep the strength of Ministers’ personal staff to 25. The decision would be applicable to all the LDF constituents, he said.

Mr. Rajendran said the party State executive would meet again on Wednesday shortly before the swearing in of the LDF government to discuss the portfolios that each Minister should hold. He did not find anything wrong in Minister nominees of the CPI(M) making statements about various issues before the portfolios had been allocated.

Whatever they had said related to the promises made in the LDF manifesto and should be seen only the words of socially committed political leaders, he said.
