An action plan has been worked out by the Kerala State Road Transport Corporation (KSRTC) to increase its revenue from the 6,400-odd fleet by ₹1 crore daily by giving more responsibilities to the personnel in bus operations.

The aim is to increase the revenue from ticket collection by ₹1 crore. The average collection now is ₹6 crore to ₹6.5 crore.

The aim is to come out of the red and mobilise resources internally rather than depending on the exchequer.

The action plan comes close on the heels of the January 7 record collection of ₹8,54,77,240 by operating 5,072 buses from the fleet across 17,00,000 km using the services of 16,450 crew.

Role for inspector

From January 16, the full control and responsibility of eight buses each are taken care by the inspector. The designated inspector is responsible for route planning, crew roster, income, redressal of complaints from commuters, maintenance and overall cleanliness of the eight buses.

Chairman and Managing Director, KSRTC, Tomin J. Thachankary said 92 unit officers had been asked to provide eight buses each to the inspectors and to ensure that 6,200 of the 6,400 buses in the fleet operate daily. The shortage of inspectors will be addressed by transfers from others units where there ae excess inspectors.

Commuters will be informed at least a minimum of six hours in advance if the reserved service is cancelled. Buses needing repair in various units will have to be operated on viable routes.

Operational mandate

The officials have been asked to ensure that buses do not operate without commuters.

Unit officers have been tasked to ensure punctuality and will have to bear the responsibility of cancelling the services. If lethargy of officials leads to cancellations, the CMD said the compensation would be levied from the erring officials.

The officials have been asked to take step to replace defunct electronic ticketing machines with new ones.

Under the CMD, officials have been designated to monitor the Chill, Electric, Deluxe, Express, Super Fast, Interstate, Fast Passenger, Ordinary and City services.

The CMD chaired a meeting of all the 92 units heads along with the mechanical and administrative heads at the Transport Bhavan here recently to fine-tune the action plan.
