‘K.R. Mohanan was true to his medium’

He was a strong practitioner of parallel cinema: Pinarayi

Filmmaker K.R. Mohanan was honest to his medium all through his life, Chief Minister Pinarayi Vijayan said.

He was speaking at an event here on Monday to commemorate the filmmaker on his first death anniversary. The event was organised jointly by Bharat Bhavan and the Confederation of Film Societies.

“Mohanan was a strong practitioner of parallel cinema in Malayalam. He was honest to the medium all through his life. Though he was soft-spoken, he was uncompromising when it came to issues that mattered. He never compromised with commercial cinema. He proved his worth through the three films he made in his life, all of which won either State or National awards,” he said.

Mr. Vijayan said Mohanan also fared well when he took up other responsibilities in media and film-related organisations.

“In the early days of Kairali TV, he had a key role to play in planning the content. His contributions in taking Kairali to its heights cannot be forgotten. As the head of the Chalachitra Academy too, he has left some lasting contributions,” he said.

In the forefront

Filmmaker Adoor Gopalakrishnan said the most important quality that Mohanan would be remembered for is that he was at the forefront, taking the initiative in any positive thing related to cinema.

“He was someone with a pure mind. This was reflected in his approach too,” said Mr.Gopalakrishnan.

Filmmaker Lenin Rajendran reminisced the period during which they worked together at the Kerala State Film Development Corporation.

Filmmaker Kamal, chairman of the State Chalachitra Academy, said Mohanan was so humble that he was not reluctant to come back as a general council member of the Academy, even after serving as its chairman for five long years. Film editor and Chalachitra Academy vice chairperson Bina Paul was also present.
