Kerala Pradesh Congress Committee (KPCC) president V.M. Sudheeran has said the party will not use social media platforms to distort facts and spread falsehood.

Addressing a seminar on social media, organised by the KPCC’s IT Cell here on Tuesday, Mr. Sudheeran said the Congress party had been facing a politically motivated and planned propaganda at the national level.

The Narendra Modi government was making all out efforts to tamper with history by burying the roles of Mahatma Gandhi and Jawaharlal Nehru in the freedom movement.

Attempts were also being made to glorify Nathuram Godse, the assassin of Mahatma Gandhi.

Similarly, moves were made to delete the word secularism from the Constitution of India. The sale and distribution of postage stamps in the name of Indira Gandhi and Rajiv Gandhi were discontinued.

All these were being carried out as an attempt to divert the attention of the people. It would be difficult to fool the people at all times, he said.

'Need to uphold high values'

In his keynote address, Chief Minister Oommen Chandy said that while using social media, high values had to be upheld and decency and courtesies should be maintained. Party men should take care not to use the social media for character assassination or hurt anyone’s sentiments.

“The Congress does not want victory by insulting and deriding others,” he said.

Home Minister Ramesh Chennithala said the government was considering the possibilities of amending the Kerala Police Act to equip the authorities tackle cyber crime, especially in the context of the Supreme Court verdict quashing certain provisions in the IT Act. The proposed Cyber Dome, which will be commissioned soon, would be able to detect and prevent crimes, he said.
