Key role for language in social development: Minister

Malayalam Day, administrative language week inaugurated

Language has a major role in social development, Minister for Higher Education C. Ravindranath has said.

He was speaking after inaugurating the Malayalam Day and administrative language week celebrations here on Friday.

The Minister said language had a huge role in social life. It was critical for growth in all aspects of life. It also helped cement ties between people. The mother tongue was best suited for forging bonds with other people, in turn strengthening familial and social ties and helping achieve secularism.

Language was also a means to enter the world of literature, science, and philosophy, the Minister said.

Minister for Agriculture V.S. Sunil Kumar who presided over the function said language was a synonym for culture. Language should become the strength not only of words but also of culture. Though Malayalam was spoken in different styles across the State, the language was one, and joined the people together.

Mr. Sunil Kumar also called for steps to protect Malayalam language.

Writers honoured

Mr. Ravindranath honoured writers U.A. Khader and Chathanath Achyuthanunni.

The administrative language issue of Samakalika Janapadham and Malayalam Ente Avakasham, publications of the Information and Public Relations Department, were released on the occasion.

The administrative language awards were given away on the occasion. The Revenue Department bagged the award for the best department, and Kannur district for the best district. Additional Chief Secretary T.K. Jose administered the administrative language pledge.
