Kerala, TN police review probe into chit fund scam

Statements of depositors in TN and Kerala recorded

A high-level meeting of Kerala and Tamil Nadu police officials was held in Chennai on Tuesday to review the progress of the investigation into the Nirmal Krishna chit fund scam.

ADGP (Economic Offences wing) Sunil Kumar Singh, IG Ajith Kumar Das of Tamil Nadu Police, IG (Crimes) S. Sreejith and SP Prasanthan Kani, who are leading the team constituted by the Kerala Police in connection with the case, and Tamil Nadu SP R.V. Ramya Bharati were among those who took part in the meeting.

Mr. Sreejith also held a discussion with Tamil Nadu Director General of Police T.K. Rajendran.

The investigation team of the Tamil Nadu Economic Offences wing has recorded the statements of 1,164 investors from Tamil Nadu and 175 investors from Kerala. The extent of loss suffered by these investors has been estimated at around ₹96 crore.

Kerala probe team

While the Tamil Nadu police team comprising of 15 officers was currently probing the case, a team of similar strength has been constituted by the Kerala Police to assist them.

The investigation team has confiscated ₹39,81,000, seven kg of gold, 12 lorries and a car as part of the ongoing probe.

The team has also frozen investments worth ₹47 lakh and has begun moves to seize around 200 acres of land under the case. The law enforcers have also instructed registration officials in the Nagercoil and Thiruvananthapuram districts to alert them of any attempts made to transfer assets that were linked to the accused persons.

The public have also been requested to convey information regarding any benami dealings of the accused, the police said, in an official statement.

The meeting also discussed the possibility of returning the deposits of investors under the Tamil Nadu Protection of Interest of Depositors Act.

State Police Chief Loknath Behera had earlier written to the Tamil Nadu DGP seeking measures to ensure that the accused were brought to book at the earliest.
