Kerala University to consider installing CCTV cameras at exam venues

Following a directive issued by the Chancellor to all universities to install closed-circuit television (CCTV) at examination venues, the Syndicate of the University of Kerala at its next meeting will consider such a proposal prepared by the varsity’s examination wing.

Vice Chancellor P.K. Radhakrishnan had asked the exam wing to prepare the proposal after a recent meeting of the Chancellor’s Council.

The University of Kerala conducts 10 to 15 examinations in a day. The examination venues are spread over 45 to 50 institutions — mostly affiliated colleges.

Officials of the examination wing told The Hindu that mere installation and operation of a CCTV network would not effectively check examination malpractices.

There should be live monitoring of the CCTV feeds at the varsity. There is also the question of cost. At the Chancellor’s council meeting, the focus of discussions was self-financing colleges from where instances of mass copying had been reported.
