The University of Kerala here has been reaccredited with an ‘A’ grade by the National Assessment and Accreditation Council (NAAC).
The council reportedly gave the university a score of 3.03 on a four-point scale after carrying out an intensive assessment on the campus last month.
The university was first accredited in 2003, and was given a B++ rating then. The varsity was without accreditation since 2008, with the accreditation period being five years. The reaccreditation process was done here from January 14 to 17 by a 10-member peer team from the NAAC.
During its visit, the team assessed and evaluated teaching and co-curricular activities; research work; and extension and infrastructure facilities of the university. The team was headed by M.M. Salunke, Vice Chancellor, Yashwantrao Chavan Maharashtra Open University.
Reaccreditation process
The university had set off the process for reaccreditation in December 2013, with a letter of intent being submitted to the NAAC. The Internal Quality Assessment Cell of the university then began collecting annual reports from departments for assessment, as mandated by the NAAC. The annual reports, which included the pass percentage of students, academic activities, and papers submitted by the faculty, were a crucial yardstick for the reaccreditation assessment process, officials said.
The university had gone for five years without seeking reaccreditation, reluctant mostly owing to shortage of faculty. The lacuna was addressed in 2012-2013, with the filling of 30 to 35 posts in a year. An official announcement of the reaccreditation is expected on Wednesday.
