The Indian Space Research Organisation (ISRO) plans to make its young scientist programme for schoolchildren, Yuva Vigyani Karyakram (YUVIKA), an annual feature, ISRO chairman K. Sivan said here recently.
Speaking on the sidelines of the 50th anniversary celebrations of the Space Physics Laboratory (SPL) at the Vikram Sarabhai Space Centre, the chairman said the ISRO had shortlisted candidates for the inaugural programme which would be conducted across four ISRO centres during the current summer vacation.
The response to the ISRO announcement had been huge, he said. Candidates had been selected from all States and union territories. The two-week-long residential programme was primarily aimed at imparting basic knowledge on space technology to the young.
This year, YUVIKA will be held at VSSC, Thumba; Space Applications Centre, Ahmedabad; U.R. Rao Satellite Centre, Bengaluru, and the North Eastern Space Applications Centre.
Rocket launch
The students will also get a chance to visit the Satish Dhawan Space Centre at Sriharikota and witness a rocket launch.
Earlier, inaugurating a two-day seminar ‘50 years of excellence in space science research’ held in connection with the SPL anniversary celebrations, former ISRO chairman K. Kasturirangan said that the applications of physics were expanding into broader areas of endeavour amply covering sectors such as engineering, medicine and even law.
