A mother’s unflinching act of courage and sacrifice has given a new lease of life to three persons with end-stage organ failure and the gift of sight to another.

Fate had intervened most cruelly to deal a heavy blow to this mother, Vijayasree of Sooranad North, Kollam, who lost both her husband and her only son in an accident.

Amal Raj (21), a second year B.Com student of St. Cyril College, Adoor, was bringing home his father Rajan Pillai, who was returning after winding up his long years of service in UAE, when they met with an accident at Bharanikavu two weeks ago.

The father had died on the spot, while Amal, who sustained serious head injuries, had been fighting for his life at KIMS Hospital since then.

Mother’s consent

On Wednesday, Amal was declared brain dead and soon after, following his mother’s consent, the youth’s kidneys and liver were donated to three patients awaiting organ transplant.

The organ donation processes were coordinated by Kerala Network of Organ Sharing (KNOS), the State Government’s nodal agency which coordinates Mrithasanjeevani, Kerala’s deceased donor organ donation programme.

One kidney was donated to a patient awaiting transplant at Thiruvananthapuram Medical College while the other kidney and liver were donated to two patients with end-stage organ failure, awaiting transplant at KIMS hospital, sources said.

His cornea was also donated to give sight to a patient awaiting corneal transplant at the Regional Institute of Ophthalmology

First transplant

This is the first deceased donor organ transplant to take place this year.

The body of Amal was cremated later at Kollam, sources said.
