High SSLC pass percentage: real or illusory?

The high pass percentage, ranging from 95 to 99, has become a norm for SSLC examinations in Kerala these days, raising questions about the assessment process. Top academics The Hindu spoke to are divided on how to view the results, critics of the high pass percentage dubbing these figures as just an eyewash not really reflecting the standard of education in the State.

The SSLC examinations, they feel, cannot be taken as a true and comprehensive indicator of the quality of the teaching/learning process in Kerala’s public schools. However, even some of the critics concede that the quality of education in public schools has visibly gone up since 2005 when changes were gradually made in the curriculum, pedagogy, and evaluation process.
