The walk down Bodheswaran Road to an old-fashioned house has been a familiar one for many students in the city for decades. Waiting for them at the end of that walk, on the road named after her father, would be their teacher B. Hrdayakumari.

Over the close to four decades of her teaching career, and later as an orator, literary critic, and educationist, she was always an active participant in the cultural conversations across the State. On Saturday, students and younger colleagues, some of them battling old age themselves, walked to her house to bid her adieu.

As they stood by at the open space in front of the house, waiting for her final journey to the Santhikavadom electric crematorium in Thycaud, some of them recollected their association with her.

Condolences poured in for Hrdayakumari. Minister for Culture K.C. Joseph in his message said with her death the State had lost an eminent teacher and a literary figure.

Minister for Education P.K. Abdu Rabb said in her death the State had lost an embodiment of virtue.

Her death was a big loss to the cultural and educational sphere. Shashi Tharoor, MP, said her contributions would be remembered forever. Others who condoled her death include Speaker G. Karthikeyan, Home Minister Ramesh Chennithala, Minister for Transport Thiruvanchoor Radhakrishnan, Minister for Tourism A.P. Anil Kumar, State secretary of the Communist Party of India (Marxist) Pinarayi Vijayan, MLAs, and leaders of various political parties.
