Governor lauds work by Ashraya in cancer care

Governor P. Sathasivam made a personal and official donation of Rs.25,000 each to promote the activities of Ashraya, a voluntary organisation run by a group of women at the Regional Cancer Centre (RCC) here.

The amount was handed over to Ashraya office-bearers at Raj Bhavan here Thursday. Wishing Ashraya well, Mr. Sathasivam said he hoped to see the organisation extending its activities and reaching out to more needy people.

Focus areas

Ashraya is a 19-year-old voluntary organisation with over 350 members, which has been working from within the RCC, focussing on the rehabilitation of cancer patients and their families. It has been extending financial assistance and help in kind to patients and their families and has been supporting the education of the children of cancer-stricken patients in a big way. It is currently providing educational assistance to over 360 children, who lost their parent/parents to cancer.

In the past year alone, it distributed assistance to the tune of Rs.one crore.

Ashraya patron and former bureaucrat J. Lalithambika and office-bearers Shanta Jose, Jessy Jacob, and Lizy Kurien received the donation from the Governor.
