Governor P. Sathasivam on Tuesday lauded the contributions of the St. Joseph’s Higher Secondary School, Thiruvananthapuram, towards the educational and cultural uplift of society.
Inaugurating the 161st annual day of the school and the culmination of its year-long celebrations of 160 years of its inception, Mr. Sathasivam said the real merit of a school was measured not only by the educational achievements of its students, but also by how they served the society.
Accomplishments
The variety in the areas where the former students of this school serve pointed to the balanced mix of knowledge and social awareness the school imparted to its students.
“I am happy that the St. Joseph’s school has been providing opportunities to students to respond to the events in society. The drafting of an action plan to provide food and home utensils to families affected by Cyclone Ockhi and serving as bystanders to fishermen admitted in various hospitals are praiseworthy gestures of the students and teachers of this school. The school’s response to the recent floods also merits mention, since the students and teachers could hand over relief material worth ₹12 lakh to people in Thrissur and Pathanamthitta districts,” he said.
He also lauded the initiatives being undertaken by the school to develop its infrastructure and digitise its facilities. He reminded that the cultivation of a better human vision must be complementary to technological growth.
“After all, true education aims at the blossoming of human personality through a harmonious blending of the knowledge and human values. Let these values guide our children to use modern technology for the betterment of society,” Mr. Sathasivam said.
Auxiliary Bishop of the Thiruvananthapuram Archdiocese (Latin rite) R. Christudas delivered the keynote address. Monsignor James Culas presided over the function. School headmaster Joseph Jose, principal P.J, Varghese, manager Y. Dyson, Parent-Teacher Association president Y. Raju, and staff secretary D. Raju also spoke on the occasion.
