German internships for science students

Indian students currently pursuing degrees in science and engineering can now apply for ‘Working Internships in Science and Engineering’ (WISE) offered by the German Academic Exchange Service (DAAD).

Students from 78 selected institutions across the country who are in the fifth or sixth semester of the bachelor’s programme in engineering, mathematics or science, or those in the fifth, sixth, seventh or eighth semester of an integrated or dual degree programme are eligible to apply for the internships. The WISE funding is for two to three months between May and July for research internship at a public or government-recognised higher education institution or a non-university research institute in Germany to work with doctoral students, scientists or professors as part of ongoing research projects.

Last date

The last date for submission of applications is November 1, and the results will be announced by February. The applicant has to independently search for a German professor or guide, under whom he or she will have to carry out the research.

Internships at private research institutes or companies will not be funded by DAAD. Applicants must be Indian nationals and must have a valid passport while applying for internships. Funding from other German scholarship awarding organisations or other German public authorities simultaneously along with DAAD scholarship is not permissible.

An applicant must have an aggregate mark of 85 per cent or above or a CGPA of 8.5 out of 10 for completed semesters at the time of applying. While German language skills are not mandatory, proficiency in English is expected. One can access the DAAD portal –www.daaddelhi.org/en– around six weeks prior to the application deadline. While the application process is online through the DAAD portal, applicants are required to send a copy of the application summary – a PDF file generated in the portal after completing the online application procedure – and a reference from a teacher from an Indian university by post to the DAAD address.
