Ganja seizure: one arrested

June 24, 2015 12:00 am | Updated 05:48 am IST - THIRUVANANTHAPURAM:

The Poonthura police on Tuesday arrested one person, Syed Abubaker, 45, of Saddam Nagar in Beemapally on charges of stocking cannabis (ganja) in his house.

According to Jawahar Janardh, Assistant Commissioner (Shanghumughom), the police had recently seized 1.5 kg of ganja from Abubaker’s house during a raid. However, he had fled the spot. A team led by Mr. Janardh, Poonthura Circle Inspector S.Y. Suresh, and Poonthura sub-inspector Sajin Louis nabbed him on Tuesday. He was produced in court and remanded in judicial custody.

He is the fourth person to be arrested, in three cases, in recent times in the Shanghumughom sub-division.

All three cases saw more than a kilo of ganja being seized, with the total amount being 3.9 kg so far. Those arrested, apart from Abubaker, were Manatha Pradhan, 22, Susanth Bera, 21, both from West Bengal; and Binu alias Pachan of Muttathara. More than 100 cases too were registered under the NDPS Act during the ongoing anti-narcotics drive, Mr. Janardh said.

The Shanghumughom sub-division would organise various programmes in connection with the International Day against Drug Abuse and Illicit Trafficking.

The sub-division was already engaged in anti-narcotics activities after declaring Kochuveli, Kannanthura, Vettucaud, Vallakkadavu, and Cheriyathura areas as free of drugs and liquor, Mr. Janardh added.

The police had recently seized 1.5 kg of ganja from the house of the accused.
