Gang robs golddealer of valuables

A gang of unidentified assailants robbed valuables including gold around 1.5 kg from a gold dealer after intercepting his car in the city during the early hours of Saturday.

The incident occurred at a residential area near the Poyani junction in Sreevaraham by around 4.15 a.m. when Biju, the complainant, was headed for his home in Muttathara. He was on his way after arriving in the city from Thrissur. Having reached Thampanoor on a train, Biju took his car that he had parked on the Thiruvananthapuram Central railway station premises.

The assailants intercepted Biju’s car and smashed the wind shield to gain access to the vehicle. They also threw chilly powder before snatching Biju’s bag which purportedly contained 1.4 kg of gold items and a mobile phone. Biju was also assaulted suspectedly using a car jack rod, which was found lying near the car. The gang fled from the area before the local residents rushed to the scene.

Eyewitnesses told the police that there were around five people who attacked Biju. The incident was captured by CCTV. Soon, a team led by Assistant Commissioner, Fort, R. Prathapan Nair cordoned off the crime scene and collected evidence.

The complainant runs a gold business in Kuzhithurai and used to transport gold from Thrissur in trains. The crime was suspected to have been orchestrated by a gang that was familiar with Biju’s routine, the police said.
