January 23, 2015 12:00 am | Updated 05:46 am IST - Thiruvananthapuram:

The construction of a freedom fighters’ memorial at Vattiyurkavu will be completed soon, Minister for Culture K.C. Joseph has said.

The memorial marks some of the important events in the freedom struggle. It will serve to introduce the younger generation to the sacrifices made by the freedom fighters.

The main column will represent the lakhs of people of the country who stood united for the cause of freedom. Bronze statues representing the key ideas of the struggle, namely non-violence, patriotism, freedom, and struggle, will be part of the memorial. A mural painting will depict the history of the struggle in Travancore, Cochin, and Malabar. The memorial is located at the venue of the State Congress meeting held on December 22, 1938.

The area is being converted into a place where the public can get-together in the evenings.
