For ‘plastic free’ Pongala

The State unit of WWF-India has urged Chief Minister Oommen Chandy to ensure that the festival of Attukal Pongala on February 26 is ‘plastic free’.

Taking note of concerns over use of plastic, Mr. Chandy has written to Health Minister V.S. Sivakumar, Mayor K. Chandrika, Principal Secretary, Environment, Attukal temple trust chairman and others to issue directives to ensure more use of paper containers this year.

Lakhs of devotees who arrived in the capital to offer Pongala were served food and water in plastic containers by voluntary organisations, the WWF-India said in a letter to the Chief Minister. Of late, the use of plastic during Pongala was high, and the waste was carelessly thrown, and then burnt, it said.
