A fisherman from Anchuthengu died and three others were taken ill off Kasaragod coast on Monday morning in a suspected case of food poisoning.
The boat, with a nine-member crew, was on its way back to Thiruvananthapuram after a fishing assignment in Mangaluru. The Coastal Police, Kasaragod, identified the deceased as Charlie, 52, of Anchuthengu.
Three others, Tadeus, Arog and Gilbert, have been admitted to the the Government Hospital, Kasaragod.
Consumption of contaminated water in Mangaluru is believed to be the cause of death. Water samples collected from the boat have been sent for examination.
Ten fishermen from Anchuthengu had left for Mangaluru on November 6. As they were planning their return, one of the men, Manu, had fallen ill reportedly after consuming water that was taken on board. Manu stayed back in Mangaluru, according to the police.
Tragedy
The remaining nine men were on their way back when tragedy struck about 60 nautical miles off Kasaragod.
On being alerted, the Coastal Police, Kasaragod, rushed two boats to the fishermen at about 11.30 a.m. on Monday. Charlie died on the boat, according to the police.
The boats were back with the men by 1.30 p.m. Charlie’s body was released later in the day and taken to Anchuthengu. Three of the men stayed back with their hospitalised colleagues.
