Huge crowds thronged a colourful Kanakakkunu on Sunday for Vasantotsavam, a 10-day flower show being organised by the Tourism Department.

Flowers in all hues and verdant plants did not fail to capture the eyes of the public as they made the most of the annual event. The visits did not end at gazing at the displays. Conversations over purchase of plant saplings lent a definite buzz to the atmosphere.

Varieties of orchids from the northeast, anthurium and other flowers, and 45 types of insectivorous plants, including the pitcher plant, are among the highlights of the show.

Lily, rose, carnations, heliconia, chrysanthemum, gladiola and other flowers from Bengaluru have also gone into making attractive bouquets and flower pots.

Horticorp’s honey stall has all things related to honey and honey bees under one roof. One can see and understand about various types of honeybees, bee colonies, scientific bee rearing and its equipment, honey collection, and so on here. Various types of honey such as ginger honey, basil honey, drumstick honey, sunflower honey and so on are available here, besides honey used for medicinal purposes.

There’s also a food court bringing flavours from across the State at the Sooryakanthi grounds. The famous Ramassery idli from Palakkad is a highlight of the KTDC stall. Varieties of dosha and oothappam are also available. Three Kudumbashree units helm the Cafe Kudumbashree stall. Malabari delicacies such as unnakaya, pazham nirachathu, chatti pathiri, besides a host of chicken dishes are available here.

A host of competitions were also held as part of Vasantotsavam. These included contests in cut flower, shallow container decoration, mass arrangement, and dry arrangement for children.
