Fitness of buildings to be checked

The District Collector has directed local self-government institutions to get fitness of schools and hospitals inspected by a Public Works Department engineer.

The step is part of taking effective safety precautions during the rainy season. It should be ensured that buildings, schools, and hospitals that are not deemed fit should not be used.

In case rescue operations are needed, people living on ‘puramboke’ land, in colonies, riverbanks, hill slopes, and in isolated areas should be given priority.

Tahsildars have been instructed to take up mapping of areas that will get priority during rescue operations with the support of election booth-level officials, that of the Survey Department, and local bodies.

Local self-government institutions should take steps to remove advertisement boards that pose a threat to lives and property across the district. Proper signage warning of dangers should be put up on beaches for the safety of tourists and other people. The District Tourism Promotion Council has been entrusted with management of rescue boats, life buoys and soon. As youths constitute a chunk of those who drown in the sea, the Fire and Rescue Services have been asked to conduct mass awareness campaigns in association with educational institutions and social organisations.
